The Effect of Health Literacy and Self-efficacy on Medication Adherence among the Elderly Patients with Chronic Disease

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of factors on medication adherence in elderly patients with chronic disease.
Methods: The study subjects included 200 elderly with chronic disease. The instruments of the research included the Korea Heath Literacy Assessment Tool (KHLAT-4), self-efficacy scale, and Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8).
Result: The level of health literacy among the elder was different from education background and the type of cohabitation. The more frequent times participants take medications per a day, the lower score of health literacy and self-efficacy, and the poorer medication adherence they have. The medication adherence has the positive correlation with the higher health literacy and self-efficacy. The self-efficacy was significant to predict the level of medication adherence, accounting for 32.5% of the variability (F=97.007, p<.001).
Conclusion: The study indicates that the education targeting to enhance health literacy and self-efficacy should be provided to promote medication adherence in the elder with chronic diseases.
